What is an eFoil?
An eFoil, which stands for “electric foil board” or “electric hydrofoil board,” is an innovative watercraft that combines the thrill of surfing with advanced technology and unique design. Riders experience the sensation of “flying” above the flat water, creating a truly magical feeling, an exhilarating experience like no other.
The technology behind eFoils has a fascinating history rooted in scientific principles that date back to the late 1800s.
The Mechanics of eFoiling
When you hop onto an eFoil, you start by lying flat on your stomach like the eFoil is a boogie board or bodyboard. With the remote control strapped to your wrist, you gently operate the trigger to start moving. Once you gain a steady momentum, you progress to your knees and then to a standing position.
You’ll notice that it operates differently from traditional or electric surfboards. Once you start moving, the hydrofoil beneath the board reduces drag, allowing you to rise above the water’s surface. If you look at the fully submerged foil wing, you’ll see it resembles a small plane – and that’s because a hydrofoil achieves lift, very similarly to how a plane achieves lift.
eFoils are designed with three primary components: a board, hydrofoil, and motor. The hydrofoil extends beneath the board. A hydrofoil is essentially an underwater fin with a flat or curved hydrofoil wing. As the rider accelerates, using a wireless hand-held remote control to adjust the power level, kinetic energy generated by the hydrofoil lifts the hull of the watercraft above the waterline, using the reaction from the water as the vessel moves through it.
This makes it an ideal choice for beginners with no previous experience, as there is a wide range of options and many beginner-friendly eFoils are available. They provide a fun ride and allow users to enjoy foiling without the steep learning curve associated with other water sports.
The Rise of eFoils
eFoils first gained popularity in 2017, thanks to a viral video that showcased the excitement of riding one. As word spread, more enthusiasts began to take notice, and by the end of 2018, leading brands like Takuma Concepts introduced their eFoil boards, such as the E-TAKUMA. This innovative design featured modular components that allowed for versatility in use, thereby enhancing the overall riding experience.
Since then, the eFoil market has experienced significant growth, with numerous manufacturers entering the space to meet the increasing demand. Today, you can find eFoils being used for other foil sports, including surfing, kiteboarding, and even sailing. Their popularity has spread across beaches worldwide, with riders of all skill levels embracing this exciting new way to enjoy the water.
Choosing the Right eFoil
With so many foil combination options available, it can be overwhelming to select the right choice of foil for your needs. When shopping for an eFoil, consider factors such as battery life, weight capacity, ease of use, and price.
Whether you’re an advanced rider or just starting your water sports journey, there’s an eFoil out there that will fit your needs perfectly. Newcomers can find great options for beginner foils. We’ve found beginners handle to assist beginners with stability and control, making for not such a steep learning curve.
Most beginners start with a standard wing, while more experienced foil riders may opt for a smaller or faster hydrofoil wing, larger wings for increased elevation, or aggressive foil shapes that allow for faster turns and fun carving.
Battery Considerations
There is also the option of higher-aspect wings, which fly faster and more efficiently, but are harder to turn, while lower-aspect foils take off more readily and turn more easily, but are less efficient.
Larger batteries for eFoils are an important consideration for riders seeking extended ride times, particularly those who are beginners, heavier or lighter riders, or more advanced riders who want to ride at higher speeds. Here’s a breakdown of what to consider regarding larger batteries:
Choosing a larger battery with a longer battery range for your eFoil can greatly enhance your riding experience by offering extended ride times and improved performance.
The Future of eFoiling
As technology continues to advance, the future of eFoils looks bright. With ongoing innovations in battery efficiency, propulsion systems, foil systems (including foil drive), and board design, we can expect to see even more exciting developments in electric foil boards.
For those looking to elevate their water sports experience, improve their foil riding skills, eFoils are an exhilarating way to feel the rush of flying above the water while embracing the freedom of powered gliding. So, grab your eFoil, hit the water, and prepare for an unforgettable experience!
A Personal Story
Whether you’re a passionate water sports lover who can’t resist the thrill of wave riding and finding the perfect ride, or someone who enjoys a relaxing day by the seaside on a beach trip, you’ve likely heard the term “eFoil”. Perhaps you’ve even spotted one carving effortlessly to wrap around Perth’s stunning coastline and shimmering waterways. You’re imagining how it would feel now right?! The feeling of glide. It takes your breath.
When Dave and I ran a shop at Hillarys Boat Harbour, we warmly welcomed customers and showcased a diverse range of premium electric watercraft. We served freshly ground coffee, provided stickers for the kids and offered treats for the doggies. While chatting with customers, I loved seeing the curiosity sparkling in their eyes as they often asked, “What exactly is an eFoil?”
I recall a lively conversation with a friendly customer who exclaimed, his eyes wide with excitement, “I spotted this guy in the water near the surf club. He was on a board hovering above the surface, bouncing around like a kangaroo riding the waves. It was wild! Was that an eFoil he was riding? It sure was a unique choice for waves. It looked like all that pumping is hard work, though!”
I clarified that what he had observed was an eFoil, and I explained the key differences and how Kai Lenny pioneered the ‘pumping’ technique, where the rider shifts their weight over the axis of rotation, driving the foil through the water column, generating lift. The intrigue and excitement around these amazing e-crafts keeps spreading, and I love chatting with everyone about what makes them so remarkable and fun!
Conclusion
Whether you’re looking to surf, explore, or enjoy the tranquillity of gliding over still waters, eFoils offer a thrilling option for water sports enthusiasts everywhere. So why not take the plunge and experience the future of water riding today?
Imagine how it would feel to be your own pilot, navigating your journey to freedom.
Enjoy your flight!
